1st Grade

In first grade, our goal is to help students become Christ-like, independent, lifelong learners. We strive to do this by setting a strong foundation spiritually, academically, and socially. Our curriculum focuses on Biblical integration throughout all subjects. During our daily Bible lessons, students take a journey through the Old and New Testaments as we learn Biblical principles that we can apply to our everyday lives. The first grade Language Arts and Spelling curriculum focuses on short and long vowel patterns, blends and digraphs, as well as word families. We also learn basic English and writing skills such as parts of speech, the parts of a sentence, and learning to write simple paragraphs.

Our Reading curriculum helps students apply these phonics skills to become confident readers. Students will learn vocabulary and focus on increasing fluency and comprehension skills through small group reading lessons. Our math curriculum emphasizes helping students have a strong number sense. Concepts that we learn include addition and subtraction strategies, counting coins, telling time to the hour and half hour, and place value. Science and Social Studies are always a favorite part of our day in first grade. We look at the world through the lens of the Gospel and our amazing Creator. Students enjoy learning about history, economics, and geography during the first semester and spend time being scientists and learning about God’s world during the second semester. Our hope is to nurture and foster a love of reading and learning that will help our students to be successful in first grade and beyond.
